Lot Essay
Born in London, Henderson, who had studied art in Edinburgh and architecture in London, emigrated to Australia in 1851. He joined the Victorian Government Survey Office in Melbourne after working on the Ballarat goldfields. The present album, which includes a few early Australian drawings on transfer paper ('Newcastle from the Nobby 1853', 'West Midland from the River 1853', and 'Richmond 1853'), is comprised mostly of small sketches taken in and around Sydney, where he appears to have lived, in the 1870s and 1880s. These latter include 'Mr Mitchell House Millers Point', 'Our backyard Woollarah 1883', 'Double Bay from Edgecliff Road 81', 'Wiseman's Ferry from Wollombie Road', 'Punt. East Gosford', 'Gloucester St., Old Sydney 1876.', 'Old Sydney, Harrington Street', 'Steinbergs Farm 79', 'Breakneck Stairs, Double Bay 1879', 'Balmain 1879' and others.
