Lot Essay

The Chinese portraits (by Youqua and others) of Yeh, the powerful and charismatic Viceroy of Canton, appear to derive from portraits of the sitter taken by Major Crealock and Emile Roux. The Crealock portrait reportedly sketched in Canton on the day he was captured, when the British took Canton in 1858.
