The Ancient and Present State of Glostershire. London: W. Bowyer for Robert Gosling, 1712. 2° (399 x 258mm). 8 hand-coloured genealogical plates, double-page map and 65 double-page engraved views by Kip. (Lacks portrait, title washed.) Red morocco in seventeenth-century French style by Bedford, spine richly gilt in compartments with label lettered in gilt, triple gilt rule border to boards, gilt turn-ins (slightly faded, a few minor scuff marks).
FIRST EDITION with superb hand-coloured heraldic plates as well as Kip's magnificent birds-eye views. Atkyns retired to his estate at Pinbury Park after refusing to take the oath of allegiance to William III. His History eulogized the Stuarts and established his place as the first major Gloucester antiquary. Upcott I, pp.246-49.
