Atlas volume only, 2° (690 x 520mm). 80 plates, of which 70 lithographed, 8 aquatinted and 2 engraved, by Englemann and Debucourt after Forbin, Castellan, Deseynes, Fragonard, Isabey, Vernet and others. (Without the half-title, first plate creased, scattered spotting.) Contemporary red half leather, flat spine ruled and lettered in gilt (leather lost from corners, extremities rubbed, sides scuffed, the lower board with some surface loss).

FIRST EDITION. ONE OF ONLY 325 COPIES.'ONE OF THE FIRST IMPORTANT FRENCH BOOKS TO USE LITHOGRAPHY ON A GRAND SCALE' (Blackmer). Forbin succeeded Denon as Director of Museums in 1816, and the following year set off on a year-long buying expedition to the Levant. Most of the fine plates show scenes in Egypt and Syria.
