JEAN DE THEVENOT (1633-1667)
The Travels into the Levant newly done out of French. London: H. Clarke for H. Faithorne, J. Adamson [and others], 1687. 3 parts in one volume, 2° (325 x 200mm). Engraved portrait by Faithorne and 3 plates. (Light dampstain to title, occasional light soiling.) Early twentieth-century pale calf, spine with raised bands and two morocco labels lettered in gilt, speckled edges (extremities lighty rubbed, scuff marks to boards).

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. 'Thevenot's travels mark the beginning of the grand epoch of travel and exploration in the Levant'. Thevenot visited Damascus and Aleppo, sailing down the Tigris to Baghdad, before travelling to Persia where he spent five months in Ispahan and Shiraz. Having sailed to India he died in Persia on his return journey to Europe. Cf. Blackmer 1650 (French edition); Atabey 1217; Wing T887.
