AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED COLUMN KRATER
CLOSE TO THE EUPHILETOS PAINTER, CIRCA 510 B.C.
Obverse with the wedding procession of Peleus and Thetis, the groom driving his bride in a quadriga, Dionysos standing behind wearing wreath and holding a grape vine, Apollo playing the kithara, Hermes wearing winged shoes and cap and two draped females holding flaming torches walking by the side; reverse with two competing warriors either side of a central naked bearded male figure with chlamys draped over his shoulders, his arms raised, both warriors wearing crested helmet, tunic, cuirass and greaves, holding shield and spear, a draped female figure standing to the left; a band of rays around foot, double bands of ivy either side of scenes, tongues on shoulder, obverse with band of palmettes around neck, handle plates with scrolling palmettes, rim with four pairs of confronting lion and boar, double band of ivy around edge
