Lot Essay

The area of Cheshire where this piece was found is rich in Romano-British stone heads. It has been suggested that this example could be from the same workshop as Christie's, 25 October 2012, lot 270, their find spots being just ten miles apart. It also has close parallels with a kneeling figure found in 1975 at Woolley Bridge, Glossop.
