With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with silvered dial and applied gold indices in 1980 and its subsequent sale on 25. April 1980. The Extract further states that the watch originally left with a gold bracelet and lists the reference accordingly as a 2499/101.
The present watch is a fine, albeit slightly modified, example of one of Patek Philippe's most iconic references. This fourth series reference 2499 was conceived as a reference 2499/101, meaning that it left the premises of the prestigious manufacturer with a sapphire crystal and an integral gold bracelet. One of the past owners of the watch decided that he would prefer to wear the timepiece with a leather strap. This required the removal of the integral bracelet, leaving a plain watch case that did not have the typical fluted lugs. The lugs had to be remade, therefore, and this was executed in the best possible manner by a talented craftsman.
The case and the dial of this rare watch are otherwise correct and as beautiful as one could hope for. While purists may shy away from a piece with later lugs, it is by any means a great chance to obtain a Patek Philippe signature reference 2499. This is especially true since the number of reference 2499 watches produced only amounted to 349. Due to the complexity of the mechanism and the skills involved to produce such a fine timepiece, an average of only 9 watches left the Patek Philippe workshops per year. Reference 2499 was launched in 1951 and stayed in production until 1985 when it was replaced by reference 3970.
Reference 2499 is generally divided into the following four series:
- first series: square chronograph buttons, applied Arabic numerals and tachymetre scale
- second series: round chronograph buttons, either applied baton or applied Arabic numerals and tachymetre scale
- third series: round chronograph buttons, applied baton numerals and outer seconds divisions
-fourth series: round chronograph buttons, applied baton numerals, outer seconds divisions and sapphire crystal
