Lot Essay

With Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with silvered dial and gold indexes in 1946 and its subsequent sale on 8 August 1946.

The present watch is a beautiful example of Patek Philippe's classical line of Calatrava wristwatches, featuring a flat bezel. The watch stands out by its unspoilt original condition with crisp hallmarks and the much sought-after Patek Philippe and Gay Frères mesh bracelet.

The watch has been in the family of the original owner ever since its purchase. It belonged to the father of the current owner, who lived from 1899 to 1980 in Geneva and wore the watch with pride and great care.

The large Calatrava model reference 570 was introduced to the market in 1938, featuring either subsidiary or sweep centre seconds. It was available in stainless steel, yellow, pink and white gold and platinum. Reference 570 boasts a diameter of 35 mm. versus the 30.5 mm. found on the company's historic Calatrava reference 96 from 1932. The most recent descendent from this classic line of watches is Patek Philippe's reference 5296 introduced in 2005 with centre seconds and date.
