Lot Essay

The sitter was the son of Peter Brooke of Mere (1695-1764), and his wife Frances, daughter and heiress of Francis Hollinshed of Wheelock, Cheshire. He married twice, firstly Meriel, daughter of Fleetwood Legh, of Lyme Hall, and secondly Elizabeth, daughter of Jonas Langford of Theobalds and Antigua. They had three sons and three daughters. Their second son Jonas went on the Grand Tour and acquired part of the collection during his time in Italy, before he died in Milan in 1784.
The sitter was Sheriff of Cheshire in 1766, a position his father held in 1728; the year this portrait was painted.
