Lot Essay

The sitter is identified as Elizabeth, wife of George Paulet (d. 1644), son of Sir Amyas Paulet (d. 1588), in an old inscription on the frame reverse. However, this identification is inconsistent with the sitter's recorded age in this portrait, since she would have been only 11 or 12 when the Paulet's first child, George, was born in 1588.
The family of Paulet adopted the spelling Poulett in the 17th Century and George Poulett's nephew, John Poulett (1586-1649), of Hinton St. George, was created 1st Baron Poulett in 1627.
