With blacked nitro chopperlump barrels with matted rib, the left tube signed in full and the right tube engraved 'MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID-PRESSED STEEL' (small bulge to underside of left tube, almost certainly from a dent being raised), 2¾in. chambers, bored full and full choke, case-hardened side-clipped treble-grip action with hidden third bite, the fences deeply carved with flowering foliage against a blackened ground, the remainder engraved with fine scrollwork, that on the underside surrounding three vignettes involving herons and geese, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE', blued scroll engraved toplever with gold-inlaid initials 'HG Jr', case-hardened locks each with gold-inlaid cocking-indicator, signed 'J. PURDEY & SONS', and engraved with fine bouquet and scroll decoration and differing vignettes of water birds including mallard and snipe, well figured 14¼in. semi-pistolgrip stock including ¾in. rubber recoil-pad, case-hardened bouquet and scroll engraved trigger-plate, blued trigger-guard engraved with scrollwork and a vignette of two mallard, gold escutcheon, and much original finish throughout, in original fitted oak and leather double case with label marked for guns nos. 21708/9

The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in May 1920 as the No.1 gun of a trio for a Mr H. Graves ordered via Von Lengerke & Detmold of New York. Specification included water bird and scroll engraving by H. Kell, side-clips, treble-grip action, and 30in. barrels with 2¾in. chambers and full choke in each tube
