Incorporating British patent no. 996 of 26 April 1853
The present Lot is regarded as the finest extant Sheath patent revolver with only six or seven examples thought to survive. Other Sheath patent revolvers noted as appearing on the open market include serial no. 23 (anon. sale, Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 23 October 1997, Lot 236) and serial no. 59 (The Bell Collection, Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 11 November 1998, Lot 125)
