With blued octagonal barrel signed in full, engraved with a band of foliage at the muzzle and rifled with five grooves, case-hardened cylinder engraved with a band of foliage at the front edge, border and scroll engraved blued frame signed 'SHEATH'S PATENT NO. 45', blued hammer safety-stop, bright hammer and trigger, case-hardened barrel retaining thumb-screw, chequered figured walnut butt, blued border and scroll engraved trigger-guard, and butt-cap engraved with a flower-head on the hinged trap-cover, retaining nearly all its original finish throughout (with the exception of the butt-cap), London proof marks, in original fitted mahogany case lined in green baize with accessories including a very rare Dixon revolver flask with angled nozzle, rare wad-cutter with centre-punch, cap tin with gold-coloured Eley embossed top, a fine Dixon oil bottle, and brass double-cavity bullet/ball mould, the exterior with circular brass escutcheon

Incorporating British patent no. 996 of 26 April 1853

The present Lot is regarded as the finest extant Sheath patent revolver with only six or seven examples thought to survive. Other Sheath patent revolvers noted as appearing on the open market include serial no. 23 (anon. sale, Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 23 October 1997, Lot 236) and serial no. 59 (The Bell Collection, Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 11 November 1998, Lot 125)
