AN OCTAGONAL CINNABAR LACQUER BOX AND COVER
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The cover is skilfully and intricately carved in varying layers of relief through the rich red lacquer with a river landsacpe scene depicting two Immortals, Han Xiangzi and Li Tieguai with a boy holding a peach. The scene is depicted above scrolling waves in a Daoist paradise including pine trees, bridges and rocky mountains. The sides of the box are carved with geometric patterns. The interior and the base are lacquered in black.
