A MAGNIFICENT PAIR OF LARGE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL CAPARISONED ELEPHANTS
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
Each elephant is modelled standing foursquare, with a saddle on its back atop a saddle cloth which is finely enamelled with stylised lotus flowers borne on leafy scrolls. The grey bodies are delicately inlaid with gilded cloisons to simulate the wrinkled hide, and are applied with gilt trappings chased with floral designs which are inset with red stones. Each neck suspends a floral bud-shaped pendant behind two protruding gilt tusks.
