Lot Essay

While previously considered a preparatory work for Bartolozzi's engraving after the portrait of Angelika Kauffmann by Sir Joshua Reynolds, it is more likely that this is an independent and finely elaborated pastel by Bartolozzi of an earlier stage.

We are grateful to Mrs. Bettina Baumgärtel of the Angelika Kauffmann Research Project, for endorsing the attribution after personal inspection (written communication, 1 March 2013).
