Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for the possible attribution, who feels that the background may be the work of another hand. The figure of the ornamental cockerel before the fountain recurs in a fragment of a work by Boel in the Stadtmuseum, Kassel (inv. no. 163) and again, together with the cockerel in the left foreground and the peacock, all in reverse, in a painting exhibited at the City Art Gallery, Belfast, Pictures from Ulster Houses, 1961, no. 121, lent by Earl Castle Stewart.
