He was sent first to Switzerland to study, and from there he went to Germany, where he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. He left for France in 1939 where he would finally settle. In Paris he studied at the studio of Othon Friesz in the Grand Chaumière Academie, where he met many rising artists, most notably Picasso. His style was improvisational. Painting for Muallâ was synonymous with life, with breathing and his subject matter was extremely broad, from nudes to circuses. He painted with great speed, fusing time past and present as he translated the people of his own world onto paper.
