The Duke d'Orléans regained control of the Palais Royal after the Restauration and redecorated the palace in the predominant court fashion. The Duke purchased the Château de Neuilly in 1819 which became his summer residence and which he retained until it was largely destroyed in the 1848 revolution. For a note on Pierre-Antoine Bellangé see lot 219 in this sale.

In addition to their overall form these fauteuils incorporate many other features typical of Belangé's known oeuvre with several closely related examples illustrated in S.Cordier, Belangé, ébénistes Une histoire du goût au XIX siècle, Paris, 2012, such as the examples on pages 408 and 479. Various chairs have come to the market apparently from the same suite as the marked example, and bearing similar marks and inscriptions, such as the single bèrgere sold from the collection of La Villa Fal'Eze, Sotheby's, Paris, 20 October 2005, lot 75.
