The vessel is carved with an intricate design of two pavilions nestling amongst a grove of trees in a fenced garden within a mountainous rocky landscape. On the reverse a scholar and his attendant watch as a bounding dog emerges from behind rocks.

Chen Guozhi was one of the finest of a small group of independent ceramicists, that included Wang Binrong, who worked in Jingdezhen in the first half of the 19th century and signed their important pieces.
