A comparable chest from the 17th Century is illustrated in Robert Hatfield Ellsworth, Nicholas Grindley and Anita Christy, Chinese Furniture- One Hundred Examples from the Mimi and Raymond Hung Collection, New York, 1996, p. 216-217, nr. 87, in which it is mentioned that these type of chests were used to store scholar's objects.
