An Export Lacquer Cabinet for the Portuguese Market
Momoyama period (late 16th century)
Decorated in gold hiramaki-e and mother-of-pearl inlay on a black lacquered ground, the fall front with three deer amongst maple leaves, peonies and cherry blossoms, the top with camellia and other flowers, one side with a pair of ho-o amongst Chinese bellflower, the other with a peacock amongst tachibana, the back with ivy, each panel bordered with hanabishi and han-shippo patterns, the interior with a central drawer with a later knob in the form of a female bust surrounded by various sized drawers, each with flowers and plants, bordered with swirling pattern, copper fittings with stylised flowers
