Since the 16th century Rakuchu rakugai-zu were produced to inform about the customs and geography of Kyoto and provide a visual record of the time. This screen depicts the scene of an Imperial visit at Nijo Castle by the Emperor Go-Mizuno in September 1626. This historical event was a popular subject for screens. Although the screen is not an accurate depiction of Kyoto there are many identifiable buildings including (from right to left) Kinkaku-ji, Kitano Shrine, Ninna-ji, Nijo Castle, Tenryu-ji, the Oi River, Matsuo Taisha and Kosho-ji.
