Lady Martha Giffard, daughter of Sir John Temple (1600-1677) and Mary Hammond, married, in April 1662, Sir Thomas Giffard, Bt, of Castle Jordan, Co. Meath, Ireland. She was widowed thirteen days later, and went to live with her brother, the author and politician Sir William Temple (see lot 142). She wrote the first biography of his life.
