Lot Essay

The plain neo-classical form and simple adornment of the present wine cooler recalls furniture supplied by Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779) to Paxton House, Berwickshire in circa 1776, in particular an octagonal cellaret with similar fluted frieze, oval paterae and panelled legs, part of a suite of dining room furniture comprising a pair of sideboard pedestals and vases and table (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, 2009, vol. II, p. 79, fig. 124).
Related examples include:
An ormolu-mounted mahogany and ebonised oval wine cooler sold from the Estate of the late Lady Samuel of Wych Cross, Sotheby's London, 18 November 2008, lot 48 (£39,650 including premium), and another was sold anonymously Sotheby's, London, 27 April 2010, lot 409, (£18,750 including premium).
