The overall form of this chandelier relates to a design for a chandelier published by Penton and Co. in the late eighteenth-century (M. Mortimer, The English Glass Chandelier, Woodbridge, 2000, p.124, fig. 69). A similar example from the early 19th century following the design by Penton and Co. with overarching ormolu palm leaves, central baluster and open frame is hung at 1 Royal Crescent, Bath (ibid., p. 125, fig. 70). The framed structure, introduced in the early 19th century, allowed the diameter of the chandelier to be enlarged without an equivalent increase in weight.
