CASE: the flared top with foliate clasped angular square section handle to recess, the bevelled glass panels with brass shuttered hand setting and winding apertures to rear DIAL: the white enamel dial within a pierced and engraved mask, with Roman hours and Arabic quarter minutes, subsidiary seconds dial intersecting at 'XII', moon hands and signed 'DENT LONDON' MOVEMENT: the chain fusee movement with Earnshaw-type chronometer escapement, Dent's staple balance and blued-steel helical spring, further signed and numbered to the backplate 'Dent LONDON 12107'; with later winding key

Edward John Dent (1790-1853) patented his 'staple' balance in 1842, soon after setting up on his own at 82 Strand.
A comparable staple-balance chronometer timepiece, No. 702, sold Christie's, London, 20 February 2008, lot 80 (£14,900), another, No. 12383 sold Sotheby's, London, 14 December 2006, lot 21 (£13,800).
