Lot Essay
The Grecian reed-gadrooned 'sarcophagus' sideboard cistern is likely to have been executed by Gillows of London and Lancaster, and follows a pattern dated 5th September 1820 commissioned for 'G. Wentworth Esq.' featured in their Estimate Sketchbook no. 3064 (Westminster City Archive).
It relates closely to a wine-cooler from Ellerslie House, sold Christie's London, 24 May, 2001, lot 43. That example had been supplied by Banting, France & Co to Frederick, the 1st Marquess of Bristol for his London house in St James's Square, and was en suite with other items from the St James's Square dining room which were later removed to Ickworth, Suffolk.
An almost identical pair was supplied circa 1824 by Gillow & Co. of Oxford Street, London to Thomas John Wynn, 2nd Baron Newborough (d.1832), and were photographed by Country Life in The Hall at Glynllifon, Caernarvonshire.
Another pair, formerly in the collection of Sir Paul Getty, K.B.E, was sold Christie's, London, 22 January, 2009, lot 4 (£22,500 including premium).
