Lot Essay

This dressing mirror is attributed to the influential cabinetmaker, George Bullock (d. 1818) based on its close relationship to two mirrors supplied by Bullock to M.R. Boulton (d. 1842) for Great Tew Park, Oxfordshire; the latter sold Christie's London, Great Tew Park, 27-29 May 1987, lots 287 and 288, and subsequently Christie's London, 27 November 2003, lots 175 and 172. Bullock invoiced seven 'dressing glasses' for the main bedrooms of Great Tew Park: four of the grander model at £6 10s each and three plainer at £5 6s each. On 16 May 1818, Boulton's clerk, Walker, wrote to Joseph (Bullock's clerk) in an attempt to settle the outstanding problems over the account and pointed out that 'the whole of the Swing-Glasses belonging to the Dressing tables were injured in the silvering by the improper revetting of the Back-boards, so as to occasion a very unsightly blemish, which was pointed out to, & acknowledged by the late Mr. Bullock.' An allowance of £1 seems to have been agreed eventually.
