Lot Essay

This candelabrum matches a popular model of Benjamin Smith wine coolers in a correspondingly exuberant neo-rococo taste. Examples of these wine coolers include a pair of 1825, made for John, 1st Marquess of Breadalbane and sold Christie's, London 16 November, 2010, lot 453; a pair of 1826 for George, 5th Baron Vernon and sold Christie's, New York, 11 April 1995, lot 231; and a pair of 1826 with the arms of de Salis impaling Tulloch, sold Christie's, London, 2 March 1994, lot 51.
