A capriccio of classical ruins with the pronaos of the Porticus Octaviae, the Colosseum, the Arch of Drusus, the Arch of Constantine, the Column of Trajan and the Farnese Hercules

This composition was developed from a Capriccio with Belisarius by Panini, formerly with the Paul Drey Gallery (see F. Arisi, Gian Paolo Panini e i fasti della Roma del '700, Rome, 1986, p. 455, no. 451), and refined in a painting sold at Christie's, Rome, 15 October 1970, lot 124 (ibid., p. 456, no. 453). In the present composition, the Arch of Drusus has replaced the Pyramid of Caius Cestus.
