AN ATTIC POTTERY SKYPHOS
LATE GEOMETRIC PERIOD, CIRCA 720 B.C.
Of shallow conical form, on a flat base, with a slightly flaring rim and twin horizontal loop handles, the interior painted in dark brown with a frieze of three bulls all moving right, their heads in outline, zigzags in the field, a hatched star in the tondo framed by concentric bands, similar bands on the rim, the exterior with concentric bands but for the handle zone, which has panels filled with zigzag and horizontal lines divided by sets of vertical lines

The shallow skyphos was introduced in Attica during the Late Geometric Period, circa 730 B.C. According to Coldstream (Geometric Greece, p. 117), the type was inspired by metal bowls imported from Phoenicia, which had concentric figural scenes on their interiors.
