AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED COLUMN-KRATER
ATTRIBUTED TO THE PATERA PAINTER, CIRCA 340-330 B.C.
The obverse with an Oscan warrior between two standing females, the warrior seated on a himation, facing right, wearing a short striped tunic, boots and a spotted, conical crested helmet adorned with a laurel wreath, holding a spear in his right hand, a phiale in his left, a shield before him, the female to the right holding a forked branch and a mirror, her left elbow resting on the top of a column, the female to the left holding a filleted thyrsos and an oinochoe, a phiale and a bucranion in the field; the reverse with three draped youths, that in the center holding a wreath, palmettes and a rosette in the field; the scenes framed by a double row of dots on either side, a band of meander with a central dotted crossed square below, vertical lines above, ivy and rosettes on the neck, wave on the sides of the rim, rays on the upper surface of the rim, palmettes on the handle-plates; details in added white and yellow
