ENGLISH CIVIL WAR -- By the King. A Proclamation To summon the Persons therein named, who sate, gave Judgment, and assisted in that horrid and detestable Murder of his Majesties Royal father of blessed memory, to appear and render themselves within Fourteen days, under pain of being excepted from Pardon. Single sheet (374 x 247mm). Woodcut royal arms and large woodcut initial. (Two short tears neatly repaired from verso, two shallow folding creases of which one slightly browned.)
Published a week after Charles II's return to Parliament, this proclamation of parliament-sanctioned settling of scores underlines the restoration of Royal authority, albeit forever more tempered by parliamentary consent. Some of the individuals named and offered possible pardon in this proclamation, Adrian Scroope, John Carew and Thomas Scot, were are among the first to be hanged, drawn and quartered for their involvement in Charles I's execution.
