Lot Essay

The Greek-key frieze and acanthus scrolled feet relate to a group of games tables commonly attributed to the cabinet-maker Benjamin Goodison (d. 1767), who frequently worked alongside William Kent. He supplied a related pair of card-tables with Grecian ribbon-fret inlay, for Holkham Hall, Norfolk in 1757. A similar double-gateleg table, with more ornately carved legs, was sold Christie's, New York, 18 October 2005, lot 19 ($60,000).
