Lot Essay

The harp crest may indicate a public commission for an Irish town hall (although the harp is in reverse to the harp of Ireland). Indeed, the design relates closely to the set (with liver bird crest) supplied by London makers Morel and Seddon for the Liverpool Town Hall in 1829 (J. Dean, 'Regency Furniture in Liverpool Town Hall', Furniture History, 1989, fig.29). Some chairs from the Liverpool suite are stamped by makers W. Turner and Son (ten of which were sold Christie's, London, 12 February 1998, lots 420 and 421).
