With a horseshoe crest supporting an adjustable book-rest above a slatted back, the balloon-shaped seat covered in tan leather, on turned tapering legs, stamped GW and inscribed 5498, lacking brass candlearms to either side of the reading ledge

Lot Essay

A design for 'Library Reading Chairs' published in Ackermann's Repository of Arts for September 1810 includes a chair of a similar model, which the caption states was 'in a great sale at the warehouse of the inventors Messrs., Morgan and Saunders, Catherine-street, Strand' (P. Agius. Ackermann's Regency Furniture and Interiors, Marlborough, 1984, p.54).
