Lot Essay

This relief is remarkably fresh and impressionistic for the period and still retains its charm and sense of spontaneity after more than two centuries. As Watson notes, it is very close to a Huquier engraving after Boucher of a Fête de Bacchus, but then this was a popular subject for the period and there are many variations on this theme. The relief still retains its gilded and green-painted Louis XVI style frame that it had when it was part of the celebrated Doucet collection in the early 20th century.
