Lot Essay

Jean-Baptiste Boulard, maître in 1755.

These elegant dining chairs were part of a large order of 48 chairs supplied by Boulard in 1786 for the Garde Meuble de la Couronne for the magasins or store rooms, meaning that they had no immediate destination but were stored for future use in various royal residences.

The delivery of 6 March 1786 was precisely described as follows:

'Pour le service du magasin...48 chaises de table à moulure, pied à gaine avec des T en dessous, le siège solide, cintrées au dossier et sur le devant avec un carré sur les coins, eu égard au marchepied on compte plus de façon, bois, menuiserie et monture à raison de 11 l. pièce.........................................528l'
They were painted by Chatard, as indicated by the label on the chairs offered here. At least some chairs from the set were also used at Versailles, as demonstrated by four which remain there and have the Versailles brand (one being purchased in 1980, three others on loan from the Mobilier National). A further chair from the set was sold from the Yves Mikaeloff collection, Christie's, New York, 21 May 1997, lot 360.
