DING YANYONG (1902-1978)
FROM AN ASIAN PRIVATE COLLECTION This collection formerly belonged to the Miao family. Yuqun, to whom some paintings were dedicated, was Mr Miao Peinan (1895-1970). Yuqun was Mr Miao's art-name, besides which he had a courtesy name, Jingcheng. Born in Meizhou, a city in Guangdong province, Mr Miao was graduated from Baoding Military Academy after finishing studies in the sixth class of infantry. In his military career he had held many important posts, including Fourth Army Commander of the National Revolutionary Army, Chief of Staff of the Eighth Route Army and Fifth Army Commander of the National Revolutionary Army. During the Sino-Japanese War Mr Maio was appointed Commander of the Sixty-fifth Army, Commander of the Ninth Army Group, Chief of staff of the Fourth and Seventh War Zones. In 1949 he went to Hong Kong. Mr Ding Yanyong and the Maio family were intimate friends. Mr Miao's fourth son, Lemin, to whom some paintings were dedicated, once studied under Ding Yanyong at New Asia College. The painter also worked as a tutor at Mr Miao's home. In Ding's late years, he lived in a flat in Tsim Sha Tsui, where Mr Miao Lemin frequently visited. Lion Fine Arts Magazine, an art magazine from Taiwan, has published Mr Miao's articles on the artist many times.
