For a related iron figure formerly in the Wunderman Collection, now in the Dapper Museum (inv. No. 5632), also with distinctive curving 'wings' see Leloup, Dogon, 2012, p.386, no.179.
The Bartos iron figure is especially refined the stylized features, carefully rendered in the Dogon iconography with a sagittate nose and somber expression. This figure created for the blacksmith's shrine was specific to the special powers of the smith as associated with the actions of the nommo or the healing function of the smith who owned it (Flam in Brincard (ed.) The Art of Metal in Africa, 1983, pp.26-27). As noted for the Bartos staff, lot 45, iron is a highly important material and those who forge it are imbued with magic. Leloup (2012, pp.93-98) discusses the topic at length noting the celebrations held for iron in which the people sing its praises: 'Iron allows the king to exist; the forger gives power to the king; thanks to iron the earth nourishes the people; thanks to iron warriors may defend the village and hunt successfully; thanks to iron ferocious animals cannot attack human beings' (op.cit., 96).

Pour une sculpture en fer similaire qui appartenait à la collection Wunderman, maintenant au Musée Dapper (inv.5632), dotée également d'"ailes" curvilignes, voir Leloup (Dogon, 2012 p.386).
La statuette en fer de la collection Bartos est particulièrement raffinée, les traits stylisés sont soigneusement réalisés comme il est d'usage dans l'iconographie dogon avec un nez sagittale et une expression grave. Cette statuette créée pour le sanctuaire du forgeron était spécifique aux pouvoirs lui étant attribués et était associée à l'action du nommo ou liée à son rôle de guérisseur (Flam in Brincard, The Art of Metal in Africa, 1983, pp.26-27). Comme évoqué pour une autre statuette en fer de la collection Bartos (lot 45), le fer est un matériau important et ceux qui le forgent sont imprégnés de magie. Leloup (2012, pp.93-98) approfondit le sujet avec les descriptions des célébrations organisées en l'honneur du fer et au cours desquelles le peuple chantait ses louanges. "Le fer permet au roi d'exister, le forgeron donne du pouvoir au roi, grâce au fer la terre nourrit le peuple, grâce au fer les guerriers défendent les villages et chassent, grâce au fer les animaux féroces n'attaquent pas les hommes." (op.cit., p.96).
