As noted by Frederic Cloth about the most celebrated Kota of this type, the former Ratton-Goldet Kota (see Christie's Paris, 14 June 2011, lot 191), this highly sculptural style with a skull-like face in high-relief was meant to evoke at the same time a mesmerizing and benevolent feeling as a protector of the ancestral relics, and a fierce and brutal force for those who may transgress the sacred space. It is a rare style and the Schoenborn Kota of elegant proportions and significant age also has the highly prestigious presence of three, as opposed to two, metals - brass, copper and iron. Comme l'a noté Fredéric Cloth à propos du plus célèbre reliquaire kota de ce type, celui des collections Ratton-Goldet (voir Christie's Paris, 14 juin 2011, lot 191), ce style très sculptural, au visage semblable à un crâne en haut relief, visait à évoquer le sentiment bienveillant et fascinant du protecteur de reliques ancestrales mais également une force féroce et brutale, destinée aux profanateurs des lieux sacrés.
C'est un style rare et le kota de Schoenborn, se distingue par des proportions élégantes , son l'ancienneté remarquable, et par l'utilisation de trois, au lieu de deux, métaux - le laiton, le cuivre et le fer, une marque de prestige. Voir également Christie's, Paris du 1er décembre 2010, lot 54 pour un kota comparable de style ndassa provenant du sud du Gabon.
