Lacquer dishes of this shape are very rare. The arrow-shaped saggitaria sagittifolia leaf is a symbol of both generosity and of food in a time of shortage. Sometimes called 'arrowhead', the sagittaria leaf is also a symbol of unity.
Very few comparable examples appear to be published. See another imperial lacquer dish from the Jiajing reign illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasure of the Palace Museum - Lacquer Wares from Yuan and Ming Dynasties, Hong Kong, 2006, p.197, pl.155. Although this latter is of arrowhead-leaf form, it is decorated in qiangjin and tianqi lacquer techniques.
