Lot Essay

Of original Indian culture, the use of this kind of ritual stem-dish can be found in Cambodia since the beginning of the 12th century. During Ayutthaya period, particularly in the 17th and 18th century, the form, with richer ornementation, took an increasing importance in both public and religious aspects of Thailand society.
A similar pair of dishes can be found in the collections of the 'Musée de l'Impératrice Eugénie, Château de Fontainebleau', France. Another one is kept in the 'Smithsonian Institution', Washington.
