PROPERTY OF THE LATE ROBERT FAURE (1904-1971) FRANCE lots 244 - 252 Mr Robert Faure was born into a Bordeaux family of negociants and shippers whose commercial connections with Asia stretched back over many generations; no doubt the reason for his passion for travel. After studying literature and Oriental languages at the Sorbonne, where he learnt Chinese, he passed the Oriental service exams in 1934, and took up a post at the French Embassy in Peking on the 1st of September in the same year. He remained in China until January 1940, with postings to Shanghai and subsequently Han-K'eou as Deputy Consul. Faure formed close friendships with several of the leading personalities within the European communities living in China, notably Father Teilhard de Chardin and Michel Calmann. The latter, a great collector in his own right, who gifted his collections to the Musée Guimet, became Faure's adviser in his buying of Chinese works of Art. Mr Robert Faure never returned to the Far East. After postings to Ankara and Salonika, he was dismissed by the Vichy government, and finished the war as an active member of the Résistance, joining the "Vengeance" network. Following his reinstatement in the Service, he reopened the French Embassy in Hungary before being appointed to Prague. After a short period at the central Administration office, he became Consul General in Frankfurt and subsequently Stuttgart, where his perfect grasp of the language greatly assisted in the improvement of franco-german relations. Mr Faure was an Officer of the Légion d'Honneur, both Civil and Military (for services in the Résistance) and a Knight of the Palmes Académiques.

La face porte une inscription en caractères zhuan sculptée plus tardivement Zuili Xiang shi [...] jia baowan: : 'Conservé pour sa délectation dans la famille [...] Xiang de Zuili' et percée d'un petit trou ; gerces.
