A COLLECTION OF RARE ITALIAN WINES INCLUDING MATURE BAROLO
Lying in Weybridge, Surrey (EHD)
Tar and roses is the epithet that is often ascribed to Barolo and Barbaresco, those most noble expressions of Nebbiolo. Anyone who's tasted the new wave wines from this region might struggle to find wines that live up to this this moniker, many are deep purple and in some cases indistinguishable from other modern international styles of wine. To look back toward Piemonte in the 1970s and beyond is to see a very different story; here you have aromas of tar and roses in abundance, and idiosyncratic wines that couldn't come from any other region. There was little new oak back then, wines spent long periods of time in huge botti developing slowly and gracefully. These wines pour light and ethereal today, they are fragile, but fascinating - singular relics from a bygone age. We are particularly thrilled to offer bottles of Barolo 1945 from Giacomo Conterno, and an incredibly rare 12.7 ltr bottle of the inimitable Barolo Monfortino Riserva from the same producer.
Barolo--Vintage 1945
Piedmont. Giacomo Conterno
Wax capsules. Conterno glass shoulder-buttons. Two vintage slips missing. Badly bin-soiled labels, two badly stained, one damaged. Levels: two 1cm, three 2cms, three 3cms, three 4cms below base of corks. Light colour, heavy sediment
