The log of the three-masted American barque Philetus of Stonington, Connecticut, on a whaling voyage off Tristan de Cunha and St. Paul's, Chilean Ocean, under the command of Charles B. Brewster, 14th October 1837 to 21st April 1939

The three-masted whaling barque Philetuss was built at Biddeford, Maine in 1826. Registered at 278 tons, she measured 92 feet in length with a 26 1/3 foot beam. From her homeport of Stonington, Connecticut, Philetus made two whaling voyages to the South Atlantic under the command of her master, Charles B. Brewster, one detailed in the logbook offered above, the other in 1839. After numerous other voyages to the Pitcairn Islands, New Zealand, the Cape of Good Hope and India, she was finally condemned in Mauritius in October 1850.

A similar whaling logbook was sold at Christie's, New York, 31 January 2007, part lot 76 for $13,000.
