A FINE PAIR OF FAMILLE ROSE 'THREE RAMS' BOWLS
DAOGUANG SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARKS AND OF THE PERIOD (1821-1850)
Each bowl has deep rounded sides that rise to a slightly everted rim and is decorated in delicate enamels on the exterior with a continuous scene depicting a white, a grey and a spotted ram below a flowering tree, looking up to the sun amongst clouds. The interior of each bowl is finely painted in underglaze-blue with a central medallion enclosing a flower basket within double-line borders and beneath flowering branches, auspicious objects and clusters of lingzhi fungus.

Lot Essay

A pair of smaller bowls with three rams in famille rose similar to the present pair but with a plain interior was sold at Christie's London, 11 July 2006, lot 190. The combination of three rams and the rising sun represents the rebus sanyang kaitai, 'Prosperity in Springtime'.
