Lot Essay

These type of boxes were most likely for storage of miniature items and placed in treasure boxes. A three-tiered box of this canted corner design but embellished with bamboo veneer is in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2001, p. 74, no. 67.
