A RARE CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER 'SCHOLAR IN LANDSCAPE' HEXAFOIL TRAY
YUAN/EARLY MING DYNASTY, 14TH CENTURY
The hexafoil tray is finely carved through thick layers of cinnabar lacquer with a central medallion of conforming shape depicting the immortal Han Zhongli dressed in loose robes revealing his bare chest and protruding belly, resting leisurely in a pavilion by a lake besides rocky cliffs issuing pine trees, while another immortal Han Xiangzi plays the flute on a raft. The cavetto is carved with peony blossoms and leaves, similarly repeated on the exterior. The underside is covered with darkish brown lacquer.

Compare to two hexafoil cinnabar lacquer dishes carved with scholars in landscapes with pavilions, one in the Nezu Institute of Fine Arts and the other in the Tokugawa Art Museum, both included in the exhibition Carved Lacquer, Japan, 1984, Catalogue, nos. 139 and 140 respectively.
